Hazel I. Nagy
( March 7, 1924 - April 16, 2017 )

Hazel I. (nee Buhman) Nagy, age 93, of Portage, passed away Sunday, April 16, 2017 at Porter Regional Hospital. She was born on March 7, 1924 in a home in Portage Township to the late Edward and Bliss Buhman. She married Frank Nagy on November 20, 1943 at Hope Lutheran Church in Portage. A lifelong Portage resident, she graduated from Portage High School in 1942. She taught God’s word to the 3 and 4 year olds in Sunday school for 50 years at Hope Lutheran Church. She was a faithful church member attending services until her health kept her home. Hazel enjoyed the pastor’s visits, usually singing along with his service. She was also a member of the Prairie View Homemaker’s Club and the Portage Historical Society. After her husband’s passing, she worked in housekeeping at Porter Memorial Hospital. Her caring ways and sweet smile will be missed by many.

She is survived by her son, Elmer Nagy; daughter, Elaine Nagy; and many loving nieces, nephews and other family members.

Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Bliss Buhman; husband, Frank Nagy; son, Bruce Nagy; step-father, Elmer Anderson; sister, Ardyce Baker.

A funeral service for Hazel will take place Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 12:00 pm at Hope Lutheran Church, 6322 Portage Ave., Portage with visitation there from 11:00 am until the time of service. Rev. Joshua Skogen is officiating. She will be laid to rest at McCool Cemetery. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave., Portage.
