Obituary

Roger T. Butterfield, Sr., age 76, passed away Friday, February 7, 2025, at VNA Hospice Center surrounded by his family. He was born on December 24, 1948, in Valparaiso to the late Benjamin and Margaret Butterfield. Roger proudly served his country in the United States Army during Vietnam in the 101st Airborne Division. He was also stationed in Germany to patrol the Berlin Wall as part of the Berlin Brigade during the Cold War. On November 29, 1969, he married Karen Goin in Portage. He retired from Mittal Steel. Roger was a member of the American Legion Post #260 and actively volunteered to help many Boy Scout Troops. He was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed outdoor activities like fishing and feeding birds. Above all, his greatest joy in life was his grandchildren and he cherished all the time he was able to spend with them.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Karen Butterfield; son, Roger (Tiffany) Butterfield, Jr.; daughter, Dawn (Kirk) Harbart; grandchildren, Dylan Butterfield, Addison Butterfield, Clara Harbart, Gabriel Harbart, and Lillian Harbart; brother, Kevin (Karen) Butterfield; and many loving nieces, nephews, family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin and Margaret Butterfield; brother, Danny Butterfield; and his father and mother-in-law, Alton and Patricia Goin.

Memorial contributions in Roger’s name may be made to VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso.

A funeral service for Roger will take place Wednesday, February 12, 2025 at 12:00 pm at Rees Funeral Home, Olson Chapel, 5341 Central Ave., Portage. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the time of service at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest at McCool Cemetery. For more information, please call (219) 762-3013.
