Born on September 27, 1945, in Lares, Puerto Rico, to the late Evangelista Castro Mercado and Elena Arce, Freddie lived a life marked by dedication, service, and music. A proud veteran of the Vietnam War, Freddie dedicated 37 years of his life to U.S. Steel, where he also served as a respected union officer, holding roles as trustee and treasurer of Local 1014. His commitment extended beyond his workplace, as he was a devoted member of the Associacion Benefica Hijos de Borinquen. Freddie's true passion lay in music. An accomplished singer and guitarist, he graced countless events with his music, from private gatherings to public celebrations like the Puerto Rican Parade in Northwest Indiana and Chicago. He found joy in sharing his talent, especially during the holidays, performing for residents of local nursing homes. Freddie's musical journey included playing with bands such as Nostalgia, My Brother’s Salsa Band, and Trio Los Romanticos.

He is survived by his adoring wife of 38 years, Raquel, his children, Eduardo Escalante, Daniel (Keri) Castro, Alfredo, and Judith Castro, grandchildren Nicholas (Alyssa) Alonso, Joseph Sense, and Amanni Escalante.
