Obituary

Carol Lyn Barnett (nee Mengedoht born April 23, 1965, at St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Gary, Indiana, passed away Saturday, July 13, 2024.
Blessed mother of 2, proud Nana of 5. Given the nickname Radio by her Dad. Carol Buddy by her favorite nieces . Her work friends at the police station called her Chop. And all the grandkids called her Nana.
Carol was formerly of Gary, Indiana and a long-time resident of Portage, Indiana. She was a graduate of Portage High School class of 1983. Carol married her husband New Years Eve 1984. She attended Ivy Tech and Davenport University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. Carol was a diligent civil servant for many years as a dispatcher in Portage, Ogden Dunes, Hobart, Lake Station, New Chicago, and Porter. She was a reserve police officer for Lake Station, Indiana. She worked as a registered nurse in many Northwest Indiana hospitals. Carol attended Inland Manor Baptist Church in Hobart, Indiana.
Carol enjoyed going on vacations, concerts with her loving husband, traveling, crafts, painting, camping, swimming, canning, going to her favorite casino Four Winds, playing bingo, shopping, and being pampered. Most of all she loved spending time with her grandchildren and family.
Carol was proceeded in death by her dearly missed grandmother; Mildred “Mama” Cornelius, mother-in-law; Linda “Gigi” Barnett, and many cousins and family members.
She is survived and will be greatly missed by her parents; Ralph and Lynda Mengedoht, brother; Carl David Mengedoht, loving husband of 39 years; Timothy Lee Barnett, son; Timothy Lee Barnett Jr., daughter-in-law; Nichole Marie Gaffney, grandsons; Brennen Jason Lee Barnett (8), Drevan Patrick Benard (16), daughter; Brittney Nicole Burke, son-in-law; Michael Burke, grandsons; Ethan Michael Burke (12), Jackson Lee Burke (6), her only granddaughter; Chloe Madison Burke (10), her first babies – her nieces; Deanna Hughes and Christina Egbert, sisters-in-law; Rebecca Barnett, Laura Barnett, brothers-in-law; Paul "Ray" Barnett, James Barnett Jr.

Services will be held at Burns Funeral Home & Crematory 701 East 7th Street Hobart, Indiana 46342. Visitation on Friday July 19, 2024, from 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Funeral on Saturday July 20, 2024, at 10:00 AM with cousin Rev. Gary Reed officiating, followed by a processional to McCool Cemetery 2700 McCool Road Portage, Indiana 46368.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Tim Barnett and Family to assist with final expenses.
