Obituary

Addison Crisman was born in Carroll county, Ohio, October 27, 1837 and is the son of B.G. AND Elizabeth Crisman. He came with his parents to this county in 1850, and worked at home until he attained his majority, when he began working for farmers in the neighborhood.
In August 1862, he enlisted in Company E, Seventy-Third Indiana Volunteer Infantry, and served until the war was closed. After his return from the field, he settled in Portage Township, where he has since farmed, excepting a little more than a year, which he spent in the mercantile business at Lake Station.
On June 17, 1863, he was married to Jane E. Holmes, a native of this county, and daughter of William and Jane A. Rugar, who settle in Porter County about 1838. Four children were the fruit of this union-Addison M., William C., Thomas W. and Benjamin F.
In 1873, Mr. Crisman made his home on his present farm of 253 acres. He was elected Justice of the Peace in 1866, and served six years. He is a Republican

CIVIL WAR HERO OF THREE BATTLES PASSES BEYOND
Addison Crisman, a heao of eight battles in the civil war, died at the home of his son, Frank Crisman, in Miller Monday night, July 10. Death as due to a stoke of paralysis, the fourth in the past five years. The aged soldier had been an invalid, confined to his bed for four years prior to his death.
Comtemplating his death, Mr. Crisman wrote a message to his minister on his 79th birthday, Oct 27, 1916, in which he gave the information that he was born in Carroll county, Ohio, October 27, 1887, and had come to Porter county with his parents in March, 1850.
During his civil war service he was in active service in the following battles: Chaplin Hills, Ky., Stone River, Tenn., Days Gap, Ala., Athens, Decatur, Ala. This was during three years of service as a member of the 73rd Indiana volunteers.
Mr. Crisman married Miss Jane Holmes, June 17, 1863, and had four sons: Addison Morton, William Colfax (deceased), Thomas Wade and Benjamin Franklin.
Eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren survive him, in addition to four brothers, Issac Crisman of Miller, Oliver of East Gary, Fred of London, Minn., Wesley of St. Paul, Minn., and a sister, Mrs. Eugene Cole of Battle Creek, Mich.
Funeral services for the civil war veteran were held from the home in Miller at 1 o'clock Thursday afternoon and a 2 o'clock at McCool Methodist church.
